Local SEO Foundations for Multi-Location Businesses

The profile outranks the website

For most local searches, the thing competing for the customer is the Google Business Profile, not the website. It appears above the organic results, it carries the reviews, and it has the directions button.

Fill every field. Primary category, secondary categories, services, hours, photographs, products, the description, and the question-and-answer section. A half-filled profile is the most common and most expensive local SEO mistake there is.

One profile per location that has a door

A location qualifies for its own profile if it has staff and a sign. A service area does not. Creating profiles for areas you merely serve is a suspension risk, and suspensions take weeks to reverse.

Name, address and phone, identical everywhere

Your profile, your website, your invoices and every directory listing have to agree character for character. Where they disagree, the signal splits.

We have watched this cost a client real visibility: two different addresses in circulation for the same business, one from an old handover document, and nobody could say which was authoritative. Pick the profile's version and make everything else match it.

Location pages: fewer, and real

The temptation with multiple locations is a page per area, generated from a template. This is exactly the pattern Google's site-reputation and scaled-content enforcement targets, and the penalty is applied to the whole domain rather than the offending pages.

We know because it happened to this domain in August 2026 — several thousand generated pages, an algorithmic action, and most of a year of recovery.

Build a page for a location only when you have inventory, staff, photographs or local specifics to put on it. Eight real pages outperform eighty templated ones, and they cannot get you penalised.

Reviews are a ranking factor and a conversion factor

Ask every satisfied customer, every time, through a process rather than when someone remembers. Do not filter by rating before asking — review gating is against Google's policy and is detectable.

Reply to all of them, including the bad ones. The reply is read by the next person deciding, not by the person who left it.
